Chair Time Day 27: Giving up Good…for GREAT!

Day 27: October 27, 2013

I’ve had a thought in my head for the past 24 hours.

“Sometimes, we have to give up something good for something GREAT!”

I have no clue who said that. Actually, I just google’d and this is how the original quote goes: “Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.” – John D. Rockefeller

I don’t even know where to begin with this thought and why it keeps popping into my head. My first question is, “God, what exactly do you want me to give up that I feel is good in my life?”

Sometimes I become comfortable and complacent in my habits and daily routine. Things are…good. They aren’t great, but they’re good. And I think I fool myself into thinking that “good” is what I want in life.

No, good isn’t ok. I want GREAT!

I’ve recently had conversations with my husband about how I feel that I have so many responsibilities that I feel as though I’m good at lots of things, but not great at anything really. I’ve also read a book about how narrowing your focus in life to ONE thing, can make your life expand in ways you’d never expect.

But, then the question becomes…”How do I figure out what to give up and what to keep?”

This is where I am at in life – in many areas: my home, my job, my church, etc. I don’t have the answers at all. I don’t have a clue, really. I’m in a place where I feel I’m totally dependent on God to help me figure it out. I will even go one step further to say that I’ve known this for a while in my life…but, it hasn’t been bad enough for me to do anything about it. I just keep going and going and going – kinda like the Energizer bunny.

Has God finally brought me to a place where I throw my hands in the air and say, “Enough!! You’re right, God. I can’t do this anymore. I need help.”?

I think so.

So, here I am tonight – at a different place that I’ve never been. I surrender my entire list of “good” to You, Lord. Help me figure out where the “Great” may be hidden and how I start making that journey ahead.

Romans 12:2

The Message (MSG)
Place Your Life Before God

12 1-2 So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

Here goes!
